Usability and UX
Website and eCommerce usability is surprisingly often neglected. There are tons of websites and stores that feel hard to use. There is a basic concept of “Don’t make me think” in usability. If you’ll have to think while using a website, the usability is not good. You should always feel comfortable that you know what happens when you click a button and you you should know where you end up when clicking a link. Similarly, you should be able to find the stuff you are looking for without spending too much time to search. Good usability is critical for a site success and it is not rocket science. Still, it seems that in many cases, it has been forgotten. On the other hand, it is hard to measure the usability without user or usability testing. In usability testing, the tester observes when external people use the website.
My experience
I have a ton of experience in usability testing and UX improvement in general. I have done extensive usability testing on eCommerce sites. Testing typically involves defining the areas to test, designing a test and the test tasks, hiring external testers to do the test, reviewing the videos and then analyzing the results and making recommendations for the improvements.
In addition to usability testing, I have also used several different multivariate testing tools such as Optimizely and Google Optimize as well as home grown systems to conduct A/B testing on potential improvements and conversion rate optimization.
